Summer in Christchurch offers you the very best of the great outdoors and city living all in one place. We’ve got everything from beaches, barbecues and bars, to surfing, sun and scenery. To help you make the most of the sunny season, here are a few ideas for summery things to do in Christchurch.
Walk the Trails at Riccarton Bush
Riccarton Bush is located just a few minutes from the city centre, but you wouldn’t know it! Your surroundings will go from buildings and streets to trees and boardwalks in a matter of moments. The walk only takes around 15-20 minutes, so it’s great for the little ones too. They’ll love hearing the birdsong echoing through the trees. With the lush forest providing that much needed shade all the way around, it’s the ideal walk for a hot summer day.
Another favourite walk of ours is Bottle Lake Forest, a peaceful pine plantation just north of the city. There are a host of trails winding their way through the trees, so you can go for a lengthy stroll or a quick wander. If you’ve got the kids with you, you might also want to check out The Groynes. Not only are there plenty of walking tracks, you’ll also find playgrounds, fishing spots and orienteering courses! Of course, if you’re staying in Christchurch, taking a stroll through Hagley Park is a must do as well. The third largest city-based park in the world is beautiful all year round!
Surf the Waves at Sumner Beach
Keen to catch some waves? Christchurch has you covered, with a number of great surfing spots to choose from. Sumner Beach is a crowd pleaser, with beginner to intermediate level waves. If you’re just starting out, head to Stoke St. Here you’ll find gentler waver, and learn to surf classes.
For more experienced surfers, head a bit further down the coast to Taylors Mistake. The waves here are a bit more powerful, so are best suited to surfers who know what they’re doing.
Enjoy a Summery Treat at Rollickin’ Gelato
There’s nothing better on a hot day than ice cream… or gelato! With two Christchurch locations, Rollickin’ Gelato is a real local favourite. They’re always coming up with weird and wonderful new flavours, so it’s definitely not your usual. ‘Gerry Brownie’ is among their most famous! Plus, they cater for all dietary needs, including gluten free, dairy free, vegan and more. So, if you’re want to cool down and treat the tastebuds at the same time, stop by for a creamy organic gelato or real fruit sorbet.
If you’re more of an ice cream lover on the other hand, just head over to the Riverside Market. Why? It’s home to the only Ben & Jerry’s store in the South Island! If you’re a fan of clever and creative flavours, you’ll find them in abundance here too.
Relax & Unwind on the Avon River
Ah, the Avon. Few places in Christchurch are more iconic. To enjoy our beautiful river, there are two main options. The first is Punting, a real classic Christchurch summer activity, steeped in tradition. Just sit back and relax as you are expertly guided along the water by your punter at the back of the boat. You can also choose between a 30 minute shared ride, or a 45 minute private tour.
The second option for floating down the Avon is Paddleboarding. You can choose to hire your own, or take a tour. If you’ve never tried paddleboarding before, don’t worry! It’s easy to pick up, and the river is slow and gentle.
Dine Al Fresco at OGB
For those long summer evenings, why not dine out in the fresh air? OGB is a speakeasy style bar with a great vibe and even better service. Grab an outdoor table in Cathedral Square and enjoy the warm breeze and live music.
Another great al fresco dining option is Astro Lounge across the river. Their secluded courtyard is surrounded by trees and fairy lights, creating a great atmosphere. One last honourable mention has to go to the Riverside Market. It’s the definition of a crowd pleaser!
Watch the Sunset from a Balcony Bar
After dinner, catch the last of the sun with a beer or cocktail at one of Christchurch’s balcony bars. The Terrace has a range of great options, including the jazzy Fat Eddie’s, the award winning Craft Embassy, or the Botanic garden bar.
Another popular establishment is Mr Brightside, just down the road from The Terrace. Whichever one you go for, you’ll enjoy great views over the Avon at golden hour. It’s the perfect way to round off a day of summer activities in Christchurch.
