Winter in Christchurch is one of the things our city is known for. The days are crisp & clear, and the people are warm & inviting. Check out a few ideas for things to do in Christchurch during the spectacular season.
Ride the Slopes of Mt Hutt
Whether you’re a seasoned expert or have never been out on the snow before, there’s something for you at Mt Hutt. Not only is Mt Hutt Canterbury’s largest ski area, it has also been voted the best ski resort in New Zealand for four years running. Even if you’re not a skier or snowboarder, there are plenty of other ways to enjoy the mountain. You can enjoy a sightseeing pass, go snow sledding or soak in the highest altitude spa in New Zealand!
Marvel at the Spectacular Winter Scenery
When you arrive in Christchurch in winter, one thing should stand out straight away: everything is much prettier. Christchurch is known locally as the ‘Garden City’ due to its many beautiful gardens and tree lined streets. When the frost and snow comes along, it creates a winter wonderland like no other. You especially won’t want to miss Hagley Park in the centre of Christchurch, the third largest city-based park in the world. It really is just a case of exploring the city to see what you can find. In the evening, escape the cold by ducking in to one of the many restaurants and bars around the city centre.
Relax at Hanmer Springs
Around 90 minutes north of Christchurch lie the fabled thermal pools of Hanmer Springs. The natural mineral waters attract travellers all year round, but there’s something a little more magical about visiting in the wintertime. Imagine soaking in a steaming thermal pool beneath giant redwood trees, all while looking out over snowy mountain peaks. It’s by far one of the most relaxing day trips you’ll ever do.
A beautiful alpine village in its own right, Hanmer Springs is also a perfect destination for lovers of the outdoors. Visitors who prefer a bit more action can enjoy activities like jet boating, bungy jumping, mountain biking, hiking and more. In winter, the skiing and snowboarding slopes are also top class.
Discover the Beauty of New Brighton
New Brighton is Christchurch’s seaside suburb. So what’s good about it in winter? Pretty much everything! First of all, the iconic New Brighton pier is one of the most Instagram-able spots in Christchurch. Trust us, we think you get the best photos during a winter sunrise!
If you’re looking for a hot soak without having to leave town, don’t miss He Puna Taimoana. You can enjoy beautiful ocean views from one of five outdoor pools, situated right next to the beach! An experience perfectly suited to winter if you ask us.
Take the TranzAlpine Train Journey
The world famous TranzAlpine is an epic train journey between Christchurch and Greymouth. For nearly five hours, you’ll have a front row seat to some of New Zealand’s most beautiful scenery. Traversing Arthur’s Pass, the vast Canterbury plains and miles of native forest, all you need to do is sit back and enjoy the show. Taking the journey from Christchurch in winter is an extra special treat, with the snow-capped mountains of the Southern Alps on full display.
Explore the City of Christchurch
Sometimes we just need to slow down and enjoy simple pleasures. On a typical winter’s day, the city has a casual and relaxed vibe, so why not grab a takeaway coffee and see where your feet take you? As you wander the streets, you’re bound to come across something that takes your fancy. The central city is home to plenty of shops, cafes and eateries with a distinct local flavour. The Riverside Market is one of the newest additions, and a definite highlight
When the temperature starts to drop, why not duck into one our local theatres for a winter movie night? There are a number of great options to choose from all over town. Need a recommendation or two? Check out the luxurious Silky Otter, or the boutique Deluxe Cinemas to catch the latest flick.
