Full of spectacular scenery, wide open spaces and must-do activities, New Zealand’s South Island is a motorhome adventurer’s dream. While each motorhome journey is different, there are a few destinations that are strongly recommended, and for good reason. So wherever you start, and wherever you end up, make sure to include a couple of these stops along the way!
Christchurch
The vibrant city of Christchurch is a common starting point for many motorhome adventurers, which makes a lot of sense. The South Island’s main center is both welcoming & diverse, making a great first impression for incoming travellers. In fact, the New York Times once ranked Christchurch at number 2 in its famous 52 Places to Go. More than just a big city, Christchurch has also got to be one New Zealand’s most beautiful. From the architecture to the scenery, it truly is a sight to behold, but don’t just take our word for it! If you’ve just arrived in the South Island and you’re looking for somewhere to spend the night, North South Holiday Park is the closest campsite to Christchurch Airport and all major vehicle rental depots. There are also exclusive discounts on offer for NZMCA members.
Akaroa
If you’re already in Christchurch, why not take the short journey over to Akaroa? This quaint seaside settlement has a very unique claim to fame, it is by far the most French town in New Zealand! The village streets are lined with historic colonial architecture, including cafes, galleries and French bakeries. For those interested in wildlife, Flea Bay is also home to the largest penguin colony on the mainland. If you’d prefer to get out on the water however, the surroundings are fantastic for kayaking. You might even spot one of New Zealand’s rarest dolphins!
Arthur’s Pass
Also not far from Christchurch is Arthur’s Pass, a spectacular assortment of soaring mountain ranges, glistening streams and free-flowing waterfalls. It is also the highest pass across the South Island’s famous Southern Alps. Make sure to take your motorhome right into the heart of the area, as there some gorgeous campsites to be discovered. Arthur’s Pass is widely known for its many memorable walking and hiking trails, so it is worth getting out at some point! There are tracks for literally any level of fitness, all offering brilliant natural views. While you’re here, be sure to check out the beautiful Devil’s Punchbowl Falls. How did that name come about? We’ll let you find that out for yourself…
Queenstown
No matter where you go in the South Island, it’s hard to beat the scenery and vibe of Queenstown. Set against a backdrop of soaring mountains on the shores of Lake Wakatipu, it is the definition of picturesque. As the tourism capital of the South Island, adrenaline activities are plentiful, so there’s always something new to excite and inspire. If you’re travelling the South Island in winter, Queenstown will greet you as a welcoming winter resort town. You’ll meet plenty of skiers and snowboarders from all over the globe, creating a special community over the snowy season. There are several world class ski fields within touching distance of Queenstown, with the famous Cardrona & Coronet Peak among the most popular. In short, you’ll want to bring the skis, so we hope your motorhome has plenty of storage!
Milford Sound
If you’ve ever seen photos of New Zealand’s beautiful landscape, chances are you’ve seen photos of Milford Sound. The scenery looks more like something you’d see in a fantasy film, and it’s even better in real life! You’ll find this gem at the tip of Fiordland National Park, which occupies the southwestern corner of the country. This one may take a while to get to, but it’s well worth it! If you feel like you’ve been in the motorhome for too long by the time you arrive, stretch your legs on the beautiful Milford Track. This pristine track is one of the area’s Great Walks, and has even been described as ‘the finest walk in the world’.
