Parks & Reserves
You may have heard Christchurch described as ‘The Garden City’, and for good reason. You’ll find a host of parks, gardens & forests spread all throughout the Canterbury region. A local favourite is Hagley Park, located in central Christchurch. Set among century-old trees, it’s a great place to take a leisurely stroll through the greenery and breathe in the fresh air. Another favourite is the beautiful Christchurch Botanic Gardens, complete with walking tracks and plenty of ideal picnic spots.
Canterbury Museum
While you’re there, don’t miss the Canterbury Museum, which is also located at the Botanic Gardens. The fascinating exhibits are always changing, and there’s something to appeal to all interests.
Markets
Looking for something to do with your Saturday morning? Head down to the Christchurch Farmer’s Market. If you’d rather head out on a Sunday, the Riccarton Market is the largest market in Christchurch. With over 300 stalls, you’re bound to find a tasty treat, or even a bargain or two. Open from 9am – 2pm, whatever the weather.
Sumner Beach
Make your way out to Sumner and check out the idyllic Sumner Beach. Go for a stroll along the sand, take a dip in the ocean, or even explore the iconic Cave Rock. With its caves and archways below, and vast coastal views from the summit, this massive chunk of lava makes this beach unique among its neighbours. Don’t forget to look out for interesting marine wildlife!
