With so many hidden gems around the wider Canterbury region, you’ve just got to go exploring! Here are some of the top day trips you can do from Christchurch.
Arthur’s Pass
Surrounded by the Southern Alps, Arthur’s Pass National Park is one of New Zealand’s top spots for walking and hiking. Choose from the many tracks, with options for all ages and abilities. Take as long or as little as you like, with walks ranging from 15 minutes to 5 days! (Just a little longer than a day trip…) On your travels, you’ll come across majestic mountains, flowing rivers, cascading waterfalls and stunning alpine views. Watch out for the cheeky Kea birds as well, the world’s only alpine parrot. These guys are among the most intelligent birds on the planet and are only found in New Zealand’s South Island. Known for their curious and inquisitive nature, Kea enjoy solving puzzles or even picking things to pieces!
Hanmer Springs
Ninety minutes from Christchurch you’ll find the charming alpine town of Hanmer Springs. The number one attraction here is the famous Hanmer Springs Thermal Pools and Spa. Set in beautiful alpine surroundings, the thermal mineral, sulphur and freshwater pools will leave you relaxed and refreshed. Besides the pools, there are plenty of other activities around the village, especially if you’re after that adrenaline rush. These include skiing, rafting, jetboating and bungy jumping to name a few. If you’re after a more family oriented excursion, check out the Hanmer Springs Animal Park or go for a stroll through the beautiful Heritage Forest Area.
Kaikoura
Encounter a range of marine life in the coastal town of Kaikoura. Home to creatures such as whales, dolphins, seals and albatrosses, it is one of the South Island’s eco-tourism hubs. What’s more, Kaikoura’s natural beauty can be experienced via land, sea or sky. You can take a Kaikoura Marine Tour across the water, a coastline walk, or a scenic flight to see all the beautiful scenery and marine life from above. Be sure to treat yourself to the local seafood as well, especially the fresh crayfish.
Akaroa & Banks Peninsula
A day trip around the picturesque Banks Peninsula is sure to be a highlight of your travels. Not only is Akaroa a beautiful seaside destination, the drive there is just as much a part of the experience. You’ll find stunning views and photo opportunities as you pass through the various bays and townships along the way. Eventually you’ll reach Akaroa, a coastal town rich in culture and heritage. Akaroa is unique in that it was New Zealand’s only French settlement, and still has a distinctly French influence today. The colonial architecture, boutique shopping and dedication to fine food give Akaroa plenty of character and charm, making it a memorable stop for all.
