Although Christchurch is often used as the start or end point for people’s journeys, there’s actually a tonne of stuff to do here! These are some of our favourite things to do in our great city…

Port Hills

Some of our favourite walking tracks are up in the Port Hills which is generally no more than a 20minute drive from wherever you are staying in Christchurch. You get a beautiful view of Christchurch across to the Southern Alps on one side and then views of the Harbour on the other. or

Bottle Lake Forest

Em's favourite spot in Christchurch! Buster loves it too! This extensive pine plantation runs alongside the coast in the north-east of the city and offers a myriad of tracks for mountain-biking, horse-riding, and walking.

Botanic Gardens

The Gardens sprawl over an area of 21 hectares and lie adjacent to the loop of the Avon River next to Hagley Park. The Christchurch Botanic Gardens have a variety of collection of exotic and local plants of New Zealand.

Arts Centre

Located in the heart of Christchurch, and open seven days, the Arts Centre takes up an entire city block and is filled with exhibitions, markets and boutique shops. Rollickin' Gelato is a favourite!

Antarctic Centre

You’ll visit ‘Antarctica’ the snow and ice experience, survive an Antarctic Storm, learn about life in modern day Antarctica and Scott Base, and hang out with Little Blue Penguins! There’s also the famously exciting Hagglund ride and an awesome simulated 4D cruise, Happy Feet 4D, plus heaps more! You can often get cheap tickets on bookme. or

Willowbank Wildlife Reserve

If you haven't seen a Kiwi yet, this is your chance! Willowbank Wildlife Reserve is a wildlife park and nature reserve in Christchurch and is lots of fun for the family. Let us know if you plan to go and we can give you discounted tickets.

Orana Wildlife Park

New Zealand's only open-range zoo, sitting on 80 hectares of land, located on the outskirts of Christchurch. Home to New Zealand's only Gorilla, Lions, Giraffe and much much more. Fun for the whole family

Margaret Mahy Playground

This is the largest playground in the Southern Hemisphere so there has to be something for everyone! There’s lots of different equipment for all age groups – sliding, swinging, balancing, climbing, jumping – your kids will only be limited by their imaginations.

Cardboard Cathedral

ChristChurch Cathedral is slightly different. The original Cathedral was badly damaged in the Christchurch earthquake in February 2011. It is the world’s only cathedral made substantially of cardboard.

Christchurch Cathedral

ChristChurch Cathedral is the focal point of Cathedral Square in the heart of Christchurch. The Cathedral was badly damaged by the earthquake of 22 February 2011.

Hagley Park

Hagley Park is the third largest city based park in the world.

When we aren’t busy working, we try to get out of Christchurch when we can and explore the beautiful surroundings. Here are a few of our favourite day trips. If any of these tickle your fancy, speak to reception to get brochures or some suggestions for accommodation if you want to make it the next stop on your journey.

Akaroa - 1 hour 20 minutes drive

Wander the charming village of Akaroa, the only French settlement established in New Zealand. Start with a scenic drive through the magnificent Banks Peninsula where you’re treated to summit views of Akaroa Harbour, the Canterbury Plains and the distant Southern Alps and then swim with the world’s smallest and rarest Hector dolphins or opt for a harbour cruise.

Hanmer Springs - 1 hour 55 minutes drive

Located in the Canterbury region to the north of Christchurch, Hanmer Springs is home to natural thermal pools, impressive mountain landscapes and its all-round relaxing atmosphere. A thermal wonderland, Hanmer Springs is the perfect combination of beautiful scenery and relaxation.

A premier wine region in New Zealand; home to over 80 wineries and 4 wine restaurants; including Pegasus Bay, Waipara Hills, Torlesse Wines and Waipara Springs, home to some of the tastiest Pinot Noir, Riesling and Chardonnay grapes.

Kaikoura - 2 hours 40 minutes drive

Drive out of Christchurch through the rural region of North Canterbury, before you arrive at Kaikoura, the place where the mountains meet the sea. Kaikoura is known for its wide variety of marine mammals, and if you do a whale watch tour you will hopefully see some giant sperm whales, playful dusky dolphins and fur seals.
