If your family is looking for things to do in Christchurch, you’re in the right place! There are plenty of family friendly activities located all around the city, without having to go too far. Here are our top picks!
Margaret Mahy Playground
The Margaret Mahy Family Playground is well-known throughout the country as one of the best playgrounds in New Zealand. Of the many family activities in Christchurch, this is the most ‘must-do’ of them all! There is something for kids of all ages (and we mean all ages) so you can easily stay for hours. In fact, you’ll probably need a decent incentive to convince the kids to leave! As well as the playground itself (which is massive and awesome), there is also a water play area, food & coffee vendors, free BBQs, and a covered picnic area.
Christchurch Tram
You just can’t miss taking a ride through the city on one of the iconic Christchurch trams. Kids will love the novelty, and the knowledgeable operators can tell you all about the city’s history, sights and landmarks. While the tram is an enjoyable family activity on its own, it also has convenient stops along the way for other interesting things to do in Christchurch. The Avon River, Re:START Mall, Canterbury Museum and Cathedral Junction are just a few of the local hotspots you’ll come across on your journey. Your tram ticket also allows you to get on and off as much as you like throughout the day, so it’s great value as well!
Botanic Gardens
A walk through the Botanic Gardens is always a great family day out. A big part of Christchurch’s heritage, the gardens have grown with the city over the years. Now, it’s no accident that Christchurch is referred to as the Garden City! Take your time meandering through 10 different gardens, surrounded by the beautiful Avon River. Admission is free, open every day from 7am. If the kids still have energy to burn after your walk, let them loose on the playground next or the large paddling pool! There is also a café located at the Visitor Centre.
Christchurch Gondola
What better way to see Christchurch than all at the same time! Suspended above Mt Cavendish, the Christchurch Gondola is an unforgettable sightseeing experience for all ages. The 360 degree views are nothing less than breath-taking, looking over Christchurch’s cityscape, the majestic Southern Alps, the rolling hills of Banks Peninsula and the Canterbury Plains. Once you reach the top, you’ll then be able to enjoy even more views from the Red Rock Café, or take a stroll through the summit trails. You’ll also not want to miss the Time Tunnel, a very entertaining amusement park style ride. Included with your gondola ticket, this one is also a real hit with the kids!
Antarctic Centre
The International Antarctic Centre is without a doubt one of Christchurch’s must-do activities. An extremely innovative attraction, highlights include the world’s first indoor snow & ice experience, and the exhilarating indoor snowstorm, also a world first! The Antarctic Hägglund Ride is also a must, taking you on an adventure course in a genuine Antarctic vehicle. Other activities include trying on your own Antarctic clothing, fantastic audio-visual presentations, and even meeting penguins and huskies! The beauty of the Antarctic Centre is that all of the activities are enjoyable for all ages, making it easily one of the best family activities in Christchurch. It’s also just a 6 minute drive from North South Holiday Park!
Orana Wildlife Park
Got some animal lovers in the family? You can’t go wrong with a trip to the zoo! Orana Park is the only place in New Zealand where you can see gorillas, so it’s worth the trip for that alone. You’ll also meet all sorts of other animals from all over the globe, including lions, giraffes, rhinos, kiwi, and more! To get the most out of your visit, we recommend catching the scheduled feeding times, and hopping aboard the free Safari Shuttle. The kids will definitely love getting up close and personal with all the majestic creatures!
Quake City
Quake City is an interactive museum dedicated to the 2010 and 2011 Christchurch earthquakes. Both educational and inspiring, the museum tells stories of hope and heroism in light of the devastating events that took place. You’ll also learn the fascinating science behind earthquakes and liquefaction. Precious objects from the quakes are also found here, such as the clocks from the now-demolished railway station, and the spire of the iconic ChristChurch Cathedral.
North South Holiday Park is located just 5 minutes from Christchurch Airport, and close to many great family activities. With excellent facilities and a serene setting, it is the perfect base for travelling families. Check out our range of Christchurch accommodation options.
