Autumn in Christchurch

Welcome to one of the most magical times of year in the Garden City! If you’ve never experienced Autumn in Christchurch, you’re in for a real treat. From March to May, the city transforms into a picturesque haven, think golden trees, crisp air, and a peaceful atmosphere thanks to fewer crowds. With plenty of local charm, it’s the perfect season to slow down and soak it all in. We’ve been fortunate enough to call this city home for many years, and this season is one of our favourites. Here are our top Autumn activities in Christchurch, tried and tested!

1. Explore The Gardens

The Christchurch Botanic Gardens are a must-visit in Autumn. Established in 1863, these gardens span 21 hectares and feature diverse plant collections. During Autumn, trees display a stunning spread of reds, oranges, and yellows. A leisurely stroll along the Avon River, which meanders through the gardens, offers peaceful views of these vibrant colors reflecting off the water. Don’t miss the Central Rose Garden, where late-blooming roses add to the seasonal charm.

For those keen on a bit more adventure, the Port Hills have trails like the Bridle Path, providing panoramic views of the city framed by autumn colours.

2. Cycle The Trails

For those who enjoy cycling, Christchurch offers numerous trails that are especially beautiful in Autumn. The cooler temperatures and scenic routes make it an ideal time for a bike ride.

One of Emily’s favourite spots in Christchurch is Bottle Lake Forest Park, a fantastic setting in the Autumn. Located approximately 10 kilometers northeast of the city center, this 800-hectare pine forest offers well-maintained trails suitable for various skill levels. The cooler temperatures make for a comfortable ride, and the forest’s mix of evergreens and deciduous trees ensures a captivating blend of green and golden foliage. After your ride, consider relaxing at the nearby beach, accessible via the coastal track.

3. Visit Local Markets

Autumn is harvest season, making it the perfect time to explore local markets. The Christchurch Farmers’ Market, held every Saturday at the historic Riccarton House, showcases all sorts of fresh produce, artisanal goods, and gourmet treats. Sample seasonal fruits like apples and pears, and enjoy freshly baked goods while listening to live music. The market’s picturesque setting enhances the experience, surrounded by mature trees displaying Autumn colours.

There are also a few other markets around town you can visit at different times of the week, a great way to get a taste of local life and all the flavours of Christchurch!

4. Attend Seasonal Events

Christchurch’s event calendar is bustling in Autumn, as the city comes alive with events. Here are some a few events to consider:

– NZ Warriors vs. Newcastle Knights: On April 25, 2025, experience the excitement of NRL as the Warriors host the Newcastle Knights at Apollo Projects Stadium. Up the Wahs!

– Black Ferns vs. Canada: On May 17, 2025, watch the world No.2 Black Ferns take on Canada at Apollo Projects Stadium. Get behind the girls!

– Open Christchurch 2025: From May 2-4, 2025, explore the city’s architectural wonders during this annual festival, offering behind-the-scenes access to some of Christchurch’s most iconic buildings.

5. Savor Local Cuisine

Autumn’s bounty is reflected in Christchurch’s culinary scene. Many restaurants feature seasonal menus highlighting local produce. The Terrace, overlooking the Avon River, has a number of restaurants and bars with outdoor seating, allowing you to dine while soaking in the Autumn ambiance. Pair your meal with a glass of wine from nearby vineyards to complete the experience. Here are some of our favourite Christchurch restaurants you need to try!

6. Enjoy a Scenic Drive

The Canterbury region offers stunning landscapes, especially as the leaves change color. A day trip to Hanmer Springs, approximately a 1.5-hour drive from Christchurch, is highly recommended. This alpine village is renowned for its thermal pools, where you can relax amidst the crisp autumn air. The drive itself is picturesque, with rolling hills and forests showcasing a palette of autumn colors.

Here are all of our favourite day trips from Christchurch, many of which will allow you to fully appreciate the Autumn scenery.
