While we have our own playground and North South Holiday Park, there’s definitely something special about this one!
The Margaret Mahy Family Playground is a huge fun filled area where people of all ages and abilities can enjoy a diverse range of activities.
The playground was inspired by and named after one of New Zealand’s esteemed and popular author of children’s and young adult books. Margaret Mahy (1936-2012) wrote more than 100 picture books, 40 novels and a collections of short stories. At the time of her death she was awarded the international Hans Christian Andersen Medal for her “lasting contribution to children’s literature”.
Design
The theme of the playground was inspired by the natural environment of the Canterbury Plains and Port Hills. The central location is bordered by Madras, Manchester and Armagh streets, and is part of the Ōtākaro/Avon River Precinct.
The playground features a unique mix of playground equipment, interactive spaces, gardens, artwork, water features, recreational and picnic areas, visitor parking, and public facilities to be used and enjoyed by children and adults alike.
The design of the playground was developed by way of collaboration between local children who who took part in the BNZ Amazing Place Competition, Ngāi Tahu, play equipment specialists, and official designers.
The Margaret Mahy Family Playground is located just 15 minutes away from North South Holiday Park, and is one of the top Christchurch activities for kids!
