Christchurch City

Surrounded by the majestic Southern Alps and the Canterbury Plains stretching out to the Pacific Ocean, Christchurch is a bustling city of beauty and historical charm.

Located on the east coast of the South Island, Christchurch is regarded as the most beautiful city in New Zealand. With a population of over 350,000, Christchurch is the South Island’s largest city. Our Christchurch camping ground is the ideal budget Christchurch accommodation for your stay.

Christchurch has a lively entertainment scene and strong cultural heritage, gorgeous parks and gardens, lots of sports facilities and great shopping. Whether you are staying for 1 night or 100 nights, take the time to explore this vibrant city and its surrounding countryside – you may never leave!

Christchurch’s Gardens
Christchurch boasts well established, manicured civic gardens such as Hagley Park, the Botanic Gardens and of course The Mona Vale along the banks of the River Avon; all of which are owed much to the extensive planning of the city’s founding fathers. Ask us here at our Christchurch Airport motel accommodation for driving directions and more information.

In 1997, Christchurch was judged Overall Winner of Major Cities in the Nations in Bloom International Competition to become 'Garden City of the World', complete with both exotic and indigenous plants of every description.

Christchurch’s Climate
Christchurch has a mild sunny climate in the summer time which makes any outdoors pursuit pleasant. In the winter, some snowfall can be expected and the temperature can sit in the single figures or below – so wrap up warmly!

Dining in Christchurch
A great holiday requires great location, great company and, most importantly, great food. Guests on a budget can enjoy the BBQ facilities, right here at our Christchurch Airport holiday park. The Bishopdale supermarket is located close by, for supplies. Just across the road from North South Holiday Park is the Highway Inn, which offers truck stop-style breakfasts, lunches and dinners and a fully licensed bar. For takeaways you’ll find a great variety at Northlands Mall, just a 5 minute drive, or head into Christchurch City Centre and explore the many restaurants, cafés and bars.

The History of Christchurch
Maori oral history suggests that people first inhabited the Christchurch and Canterbury area about 1000 years ago. These first inhabitants were moa-hunting tribes using this now extinct bird for both food and its feathers and bone. By 1800 the Ngai Tahu controlled the coast, with a fortified village at Kaiapoi. This was also a major trading centre for greenstone, which was collected over the Alps on the West Coast.

The first Europeans landed in Canterbury in 1815, 45 years after Captain James Cook. In 1840 the first Europeans settled on the plains and whaling ships were operating out of Lyttelton by 1850 followed by the first organised groups of English settlers.

Christchurch became a city by Royal Charter on July 31, 1856, making it officially the oldest established city in New Zealand.
